From the Pastor: Rooted In Faith, 150 Years Strong

For 150 years, this congregation has been a place where faith takes root and neighbors become family — and this year we celebrate that legacy together. As we took our first steps in the planning process, members of the planning team reminisced about their personal experiences at SPC. The conversation moved from the physical spaces our congregation has occupied, to church leadership through the years, to the ministries that have shaped who we are today. We talked about how church life has changed since our founding 150 years ago, and who we've become since then.

We might look at where we stand today in SPC's story and wonder how we measure up. But one thing is clear: the more things change, the more they stay the same. The driving force that gives our congregation life is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow. We are a mission-focused church, and our identity is rooted in generous hearts. We can't tell our story without mentioning Edmarc, Living Waters, the Mission Garden, the Willis Volper Scholarship, and our support for Suffolk Christian Fellowship and PCUSA Special Offerings. Our story is defined by how we love our neighbor.

This summer, our lectionary has traced God's relationship with the early patriarchs. Through scripture, we've heard about God's grand plan for Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Yet looking at this family's character, it's hard not to wonder why God chose them as the fathers of our story. Abraham and Jacob both struggled at times to stay faithful to God — only Isaac stands out as an example of faith and trust. Even so, God saw beyond their flaws. God's plan was bigger than what they could see, and bigger than what we can see too.

The same holds true for us. God knows our full story and holds a purpose for our lives as well. In Jeremiah 29:11, God speaks through the prophet to his people: "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." These words bring us comfort as we continue to live out God's story. It's important not only to look back at where we've been, but also to look ahead at what's still possible. This 150th anniversary gives us a wonderful opportunity to share our hopes for the future with one another.
